Norfolk Southern and Oliver Wyman to Host 2012 Freight Rail Planning Conference

Oliver Wyman and the Norfolk Southern Railway are co-hosting the 2012 Freight Rail Planning Conference on October 23rd through the 25th, in Atlanta, Georgia. As with our previous Planning Conferences, the emphasis of the program will be on the recent trends in freight rail service design and operational planning. Our theme for this year’s conference is “Carload: New Developments and Ideas for Railroading’s Oldest Revenue Source.”

In the face of the headwinds of declining coal and grain traffic, the continued growth of productivity and profitability of the Class I railroads has been a remarkable achievement. The pertinent question is “have recent efficiency measures had a greater impact on the costs of intermodal and carload traffic more than on unit train traffic? Additionally – is carload traffic the new profit engine of the industry?” Through a combination of presentations and panel discussions, we hope to develop some consensus on these issues.

The event will be held at the W Atlanta Midtown Hotel , located at 188 14th Street NE, Atlanta, GA 30361, USA. The conference will start with a welcoming reception and dinner on the evening of the 23rd, with the formal conference ending at 3:00 PM on Thursday the 25th. Following the close of the conference sessions on Thursday afternoon, Norfolk Southern will be hosting a tour of their nearby Inman Classification yard.

We will soon be posting the preliminary agenda for the event and the registration web site will soon be available on this site. The registration fee for this event is $495 USD, which will cover all conference events. Attendees will have to provide for their own hotel costs. Oliver Wyman has reserved a block of rooms at a special rate of $179.00 USD per night for attendees.
